The term sushi actually refers to foods that use a type of rice seasoned with vinegar and are garnished with raw fish or vegetable. The sushi rolls (maki) that you may be imagining are just one of many types of sushi.

There are several types of sushi, making it an appealing food to people with a wide range of tastes. One form of sushi, nigiri-zushi, are hand-formed mounds of rice with a dab of wasabi topped with various ingredients. Popular nigiri-zushi include maguro (tuna), toro (belly of tuna), hamachi (yellowtail), and ebi (shrimp).


Sushi sauce


  1. Spicy mayo – mix mayo and sriracha as per your taste buds requirement. If you want more spicy add more sriracha or want mild add mayo as per your choice.

2.Eel sauce-

  • 1/4 cup mirin (Japanese white wine)
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons sugar

Heat in a sauce pot over medium heat, whisking constantly to thicken.

4.Ponzu sauce- ponzu sauce is a citrusy version of soy sauce.

5.Sriracha chili sauce


Ingredients for Sushi-



  • Sushi rice
  • Bamboo sushi mat
  • Plastic wrap (cling/saran wrap)
  • nori seaweed sheets
  • Low-sodium soy sauce
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Sriracha
  • wasabi + pickled ginger


  • cucumber
  • avocado
  • asparagus
  • jalapenos
  • green onion
  • carrots
  • sprouts
  • bell peppers
  • pineapple
  • mango
  • apple
  • pear
  • tempura [cooked] shrimp
  • imitation crabmeat [cooked]
  • raw sashimi grade salmon
  • smoked salmon
  • raw sashimi grade tuna
  • and the list goes on and on!


  • sesame seeds
  • thin slices of fish
  • shrimp or crab salad
  • seaweed salad
  • sliced almonds
  • sprouts
  • thinly sliced avocado
  • volcano topping



Step 1-In a medium saucepan, bring water to a boil. Add rice, and stir. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Blend the mixture into the rice.

Step 2

Center one sheet nori on a bamboo sushi mat. Wet your hands. Using your hands spread a thin layer of rice on the sheet of nori, and press into a thin layer. Arrange 1/4 of your favorite filling i.e. veggies (cut it into julienne or matchstick) or seafood or both in a line down the center of the rice. Lift the end of the mat, and gently roll it over the ingredients, pressing gently. Roll it forward to make a complete roll. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Step 3

Cut each roll into 4 to 6 slices using a wet, sharp knife.
